PINBLEDON

Love racquet sports. Dad used to play squash back in the day. I was more into tennis & remember hitting up the concrete court at Wandle Park, Croydon back in school days, before a skate park replaced it there now. We lived close by so I’d whizz over with a mate or two, sometimes by myself & play whoever was about.…

‘CHALK THE TALK’ – MURAL & OTHER BITS @ THE DOUGLAS FIR, GIPSY HILL BREWERY

Client: The Douglas Fir, part of Gipsy Hill Brewery, 144 Anerley Road, London

Brief: To curate an exhibition of artworks in bar space between May 4th – June 7th 2023

Process: Site-specific vibe response through artistic elements

Elements: Mural design / Fine art / Interactive

I’m more of an inker than a drinker, so when I was approached to deliver this brief, I was at first open, then abit reluctant as I just didn’t connect with the idea or motivation to go ahead, mainly as a non-drinker and my initial view of drinking culture as a whole in London, the messy side of it, plus ‘yet another Hipster spot, same ol, same ol’…I kept putting it off, but then something kept bringing me back & saying just do it, make it work…

When I walk into any space, I try and feel it out, capture the vibe of it.…

POPPED UP – KINDRED OPEN STUDIOS

My first time being a guest artist in another person’s studio as part of Kindred Open Studios was pretty interesting…it was like an art airbnb, only without the bed / shower / overnight stay vibe…straight pop-up, here I am, here’s my work up in Natasha Hulse’s workspace in which I felt pretty at home to be honest…

The studio space it self was probably almost the perfect artist studio you could ask for…beautiful natural light, two-way access to outside and gallery space, nature vibes out front of window, plants creeping in from outside / inside, a delish curved wall & a buff wooden floor…if the ceiling was a bit higher, just a abit, then ooof…but who’s complaining…360 nature vibes!…

GUEST ARTIST RESIDENCY – KINDRED OPEN STUDIOS

This weekend…

I’ll be poppin’ up at KINDRED STUDIOS for their Open Studios as a guest artist, which should be fun – never been part of a community of artists in one concentrated space as such, as I have a home studio, yet find myself becoming more & more public with my practice, having connected with many artists over many spaces over the years, which have usually led to interesting projects & collaborations, so looking forward to this…

I love traditional arts & crafts, so when I walked into Natasha Hulse’s studio I felt the vibe…textiles, hand painted botanical appliqué, decorative bits on paper, surrounded by nature & sublime natural light…the perfect studio…I’ll pop up here, I thought…

As a guest artist, I’ll be responding to Natasha’s space through my own curated spread of textile artwork & objects which I’ve created over the years, inspired by nature, with a contemporary take on traditional motifs & palettes, to connect with the space as oppose to conflict with it.…
