Didn’t get time to make a full on banner to march the streets with today, but decided i’d become a physical banner myself, make some Sophia inspired badges and bang them on a coat…and perhaps, hopefully have a lovely conversation with people about who Sophia was and her importance to the Suffragettes movement.

Recently been reading more and more about the Suffragettes movement and how it all came about, and I was fascinated to discover that Princess Sophia Duleep Singh, the daughter of the last Maharaja of the Sikh Empire in Punjab and his Christian missionary German/Ethiopian wife, was a prominent figure who pioneered the cause of women’s rights in Britain.

Realising this, being a British Sikh myself born and bred here in London, this prompted me to delve deeper into her unique story which was unbeknown to me all these years.…

I went along to the recent private view of ‘Croydon School Of Art’ at the Museum of Croydon, which celebrates its 150th anniversary as one of Croydon’s key cultural institutions, and came across some pretty looking banners draped across the tables…
