CREATIVE COLLECTIVE EXHIBITION – SAATCHI GALLERY
Deputy Director of Education, Richard Stanley & artist PiNS © 2022
Following my link up with City Lions & RBKC Libraries for their annual Creative Collective Exhibition at Saatchi Gallery, happy to say several of the artworks from the schools I helped facilitate students in creating, made it in the final exhibition after a public vote > YAY! (Although my personal faves didn’t make it > Ah well)
Looking at a blank piece of paper & starting anything can be a daunting thing, especially creating some art / an expression of self, and especially when you only have 1hr to do it. During one of my workshops throughout the process, a particular student broke down in tears as he didn’t know what to do. I’ve delivered numerous workshops over the years yet had never seen someone breakdown like this. The teacher supporting me consoled the student & I went over to say not to worry as they didn’t have to do anything, to take they’re time and reassured them that there is no wrong or right in ‘Art’. I pulled away & let the student be. Towards the end of session, I went over. I had no expectations. The student had created an abstract artwork using paper collage responding to the theme of climate change, I think, but then it doesn’t matter. He had responded from a negative to a positive within the hour. We praised that. His work, after public voting, ended up being exhibited in the final selection at Saatchi…

Special thanks to all the young people involved, especially students from St Josephs Primary & St Thomas More Language Yr 7/8 Secondary schools, it was a pleasure working with you guys 🙂
Remember folks…it genuinely doesn’t matter who ‘wins’ or who get’s selected to show in any space, art is subjective, so don’t let opinions of the few dictate what’s great & what’s not, that’s up to you, as long as you create the best piece of work for YOU, that’s all that matters, truly.
